New Pokémon Foils and Promos: A Condition Checklist Before You Grade

Inspect fresh anniversary pulls, Nidorina promos, and Mega Evolution cards for centering, edges, corners, and surface damage before paying submission fees.

Fresh from a Box Does Not Mean Flawless

Recent releases provide plenty of foil cards to inspect. Pokémon’s 30th Celebration announcement confirms foil-heavy boosters and Nidorina ETB promos, while Ascended Heroes includes N’s Zekrom promos and several premium artwork treatments.

Newly opened cards can still show printing or packaging imperfections. “Pack fresh” describes how a card was acquired, not a professional grade. A guaranteed promo is guaranteed to be included, not guaranteed to receive a top grade.

Prepare a Safe Inspection Area

Use a clean, dry surface and bright, diffused light. Hold cards gently by the edges and avoid rubbing the printed face. Do not polish, press, or chemically clean a card to improve its appearance. If dust obscures a photo, take another image rather than trying aggressive treatment.

Inspect before placing the card into its final sleeve, then protect it promptly. Do not repeatedly remove a desirable pull merely to admire the foil.

Check Four Areas

Centering: compare the borders on the front and back. Artwork composition can make a card appear off-centre even when you are looking at an intentional design feature, so assess the printed frame carefully.

Corners: look for whitening, imperfect cuts, bends, or compression. Rotate the card under light without flexing it.

Edges: check for chips, whitening, rough cuts, and wear. Pay attention to areas that touched a plastic promo holder during removal.

Surface: inspect at several angles for scratches, print lines, dents, and indentations. A straight-on photo can conceal defects that appear under angled light.

Photograph the Actual Copy

Capture the whole front and back, followed by close-ups of anything concerning. Use consistent lighting and keep the card in focus. Avoid filters that hide texture or whitening. Your inventory should identify the exact collector number, language, and any Pokémon Center stamp.

An AI condition estimate can help document visible issues, but it cannot promise a professional grade or detect every physical defect from photographs.

Decide Whether Grading Serves Your Goal

For resale, compare realistic outcomes for several grades against grading fees, shipping, insurance, and selling costs. For personal display or protection, the decision may be about enjoyment rather than profit. Neither reason requires pretending a top grade is certain.

Consult the chosen grader’s current submission instructions and standards. PSA’s grading standards are a useful starting reference; other companies use their own criteria.
