USD to GBP Is Not a UK Valuation: Comparing Pokémon Card Markets

Distinguish a currency conversion from local market evidence, and compare UK and US Pokémon transactions without mixing conditions or costs.

A Converted Figure Is Still Evidence from Its Original Market

Converting a US card price into pounds changes the unit of account. It does not demonstrate that a UK buyer recently paid that amount. Currency conversion and regional valuation are separate operations, and a reliable collection note should identify which one was performed.

TCGplayer's pricing documentation describes sales completed on its own marketplace. Converting that sales-based reference into GBP does not turn the underlying transactions into UK sales.

Match the Card Before Matching the Currency

Use the full printed name, expansion, collector number, language and finish. Keep raw and graded copies separate. For graded comparisons, match the grading company and grade; a similar numerical label from a different company should not be treated as an interchangeable product.

Photographs and condition matter too. A clean front image cannot rule out back whitening or a surface indentation. If the condition evidence is weak, record the uncertainty rather than choosing the most attractive comparable.

Build Two Evidence Groups

Create one group for relevant UK transactions and another for US transactions. Within each, note the date, actual sale or asking-price status, condition, shipping and source. Exclude bundles or mixed lots when you cannot identify the amount attributable to your target card.

A small number of suitable sales is often more informative than a large list of mismatched listings. Do not describe an asking price as a completed transaction, and do not infer a reliable local market from one isolated result.

Document the Conversion Assumptions

A comparison worksheet should state the original currency, amount, rate date and whether the rate includes payment-provider charges. Reference exchange rates are useful for comparisons, but the amount charged by your bank or checkout provider may differ.

The app's currency selector can help display estimates consistently; it cannot supply missing regional sales evidence. When comparing an imported purchase with a domestic one, add all expected costs and avoid counting tax already included at checkout a second time.

Compare Delivered Costs, Not Just Card Prices

GOV.UK's import guidance explains that VAT, duty and delivery-company charges can affect overseas purchases. Rules depend on the destination and circumstances. Read the US-to-UK landed-cost checklist before assuming an overseas listing is cheaper.

For a valuation range, keep the original evidence and label converted figures as indicative. Where UK comparables are scarce, say so. This is more useful than attaching a pound symbol to a US estimate and presenting it as a confirmed UK selling price.
